ILLIENKO-80. RETROSPECTIVE

From 22 to 26 October, as part of the Molodist IFF, Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Centre will present retrospective program “Illienko-80”, featuring works by one of the most prominent Ukrainian filmmakers, the patriarch of Ukrainian poetic cinema, Yurii Illienko.  

The program is composed of five films that defined his art:

  • Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964), dir. S. Paradzhanov, cinematographer – Yurii Illienko
  • The Eve of Ivan Kupalo (1968), dir. Yu. Illienko
  • The White Bird Marked with Black (1971), dir. Yu. Illienko
  • The Forest Song: Mavka (1981), dir. Yu. Illienko
  • Swan Lake: the Zone (1990), dir. Yu. Illienko

Two Hutsul families – the Paliichuks and the Huteniuks – shared a bitter enmity. It happened so that Ivan fell in love with a beautiful girl from the enemy camp – Marychka, whose life was cut short… Ivanko could not find happiness without her. So he went looking for death that had taken his beloved.

The film revolves around a poor large Bukovyna family. The sons of Les Dzvonar part ways: the eldest joins the Red Army, the middle one goes to the woods, to join the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army), while the youngest stays uninvolved. However, they will meet again and their paths will cross more than once.

Water nymph Mavka lives in a primeval mythical forest. She falls in love with a village boy, Lukash, for his skillful pipe playing, but Lukash marries Kylyna and loses his wonderful gift. Mavka brings her beloved back his talent at the cost of her own immortality.
