YURII ILLIENKO COLLECTION

YURII ILLIENKO COLLECTION. CLASSICS OF UKRAINIAN CINEMA

Yurii Illienko DVD box set is a collection of restored films by Ukrainian filmmaker Yurii Illienko (1936 – 2010). The collection represents the most prolific years in Illienko’s biography – from 1964 till 1989. However, this time can be also characterized as the period of a greatest rise of Ukrainian poetic cinema, thematic and stylistic character of which he largely defined as a film director, cinematographer and screenwriter.

As a Ukrainian artistic figure, Illienko is many-sided, controversial, talented, and, especially in the recent years, scandalous. After graduating the Cinematography Department of the Russian State Institute of Cinematography, Illienko debuted as the Cinematography by on the film Farewell, Doves by Jacov Segel (1960) and was immediately awarded for best cinematography at international festivals in Prague and Locarno. In 1963, Illienko was invited to work as a cinematographer on Sergei Paradjanov’s project Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. Extremely positively acclaimed by film critics and highly represented in the media, the film is considered the founder of the Ukrainian school of poetic cinema, which is characterized by certain features – stylistic (European emancipated camera), thematic (historical subjects and adaptation of literary works of the 19th – early 20th century) and philosophical (dissident attitude, idealization of Ukrainian peasant mythology and archaic way of life). After the Shadows’ success Illienko remained to work at the Kyiv Film Studios not only as a cinematographer, but also as a writer and, above all, as a director. For over 25 years the Studios became a factory for the best and the most representative Illienko’s movies, which are included in this collection.

Computer restoration of the films was implemented by the IBS (Information business systems & telecommunications). Every film is subtitled in Ukrainian and English. In addition to the film, each disc contains an annotation, a brief history of the film and a photo album with archival materials. The additions also demonstrate the result of digital restoration, featuring a film fragment which shows the quality "before" and "after". The design of the box-set involves drawings by Yurii Illienko.

The collection was prepared and published by National Oleksandr Dovzhenko Centre on the order of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine in 2010.

The Yurii Illienko Collection is distributed for free among cultural, research and educational institutions after an official request to the Dovzhenko Centre.
